Working – and wheelbarrowing – for better mental health, MATES in Construction is keeping the wellbeing conversation moving.

Celebrating incredible work in the field and pushing a wheelbarrow across the country – flying the flag for positive mental health continues to be the mahi of MATES in Construction. Special moments this season included a recent event bringing together MATES Field Officers from across Australia and New Zealand to acknowledge their passion and progress.

The celebration, part of the recent MATES in Construction conference, recognised milestones in LivingWorks safeTALK training delivery, acknowledging the dedication of Field Officers who have equipped thousands of workers with the skills and confidence to recognise when someone may be struggling and to connect them with support.

MATES in Construction Field Officer, Raman Lee was recognised amongst his peers for his contribution to delivering 100+ safeTALK training sessions across Aotearoa. Raman's commitment to engaging workers, building connections on site, and helping create mentally healthier workplaces reflects the heart of what MATES is all about.

Every safeTALK session delivered represents another opportunity to start a conversation, recognise the signs, and potentially save a life.

"These milestones are more than numbers; they represent the workers, whānau, and communities positively impacted through the collective efforts of the MATES network."

Pushing a Wheelbarrow: Cape to Capital

Kiwi tradie Jordan is pushing a wheelbarrow 1,300 km from Cape Reinga to Wellington, raising $15,000 for MATES in Construction and mental health awareness.

With Cape Reinga behind him, Jordan completed the first stretch of his epic Cape to Capital journey.

Battling relentless wind, deep sand, muddy tracks and increasingly sore legs, the reality of pushing a wheelbarrow more than 1,300km to Wellington set in.

"Plenty of wind, sand, mud, sore legs, and a few moments of wondering what the hell I've gotten myself into!"

But despite the challenges, he's kept moving forward.
"The wheelbarrow and I are moving in the right direction," he said.

Jordan is taking on this extraordinary challenge to raise funds and awareness for MATES in Construction, helping spark vital conversations around mental health and suicide prevention in our industry. Every step is a reminder that no one should struggle alone.

MATES in Construction reminds us, “Looking after our mental health is just as important as looking after our physical health.

“Life can get busy, and finding the right balance isn't always easy. Instead of striving for perfection, focus on what helps you recharge and stay well, both mentally and physically. Take the opportunity to connect with your mates, have a conversation, and check in on someone who may need support.”
