Building Legends events continue at pace with lessons from elite sport featuring next in this CARTERS-sponsored series.

More Building Legends learning is lined up this spring, following on from the first offering in this CARTERS-sponsored series held on 17 September. In this initial session, speakers David Wilkie and Gary Walker engaged the audience with a deep-dive discussion on tackling decisions that impact project performance, cost, certainty, and outcomes.

Their conversations explored productivity, procurement, design, technology, and standardisation, with attendees learning actionable strategies that builders and project managers could use immediately.

Session #2 Leading and Delivering Under Pressure: Lessons from Sport and Construction

Construction projects are complex, fast moving and high pressure, and the next in the series of Building Legends sessions, led by Building Institute Aotearoa, will tackle this topic head on. Success depends on strong leadership and the ability to deliver in the face of constant change, risk and competing priorities and, in the second of this year’s CARTERS-sponsored series, Kieran Nally and Nat Chapman will explore what high performance looks like in practice. They will draw on lessons from elite sport and apply them to the realities of leading teams and managing complex construction projects.

Kieran brings the perspective of a leader who has guided teams and organisations through growth, challenge and change. Natalie adds a people and performance lens, grounded in her experience developing leaders and high performing environments, with insights drawn from sport, teamwork and wellbeing. Together, they will unpack how to lead with clarity, build teams that perform under pressure, and improve decision making and communication across project teams.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify leadership and team behaviours that improve performance on complex projects

  • Translate lessons from sport into practical approaches for managing risk, change and pressure

  • Use mindset, habits and emotional control to support better decisions under stress

  • Strengthen relationships and communication across clients, consultants, contractors and teams

  • Apply practical tools to improve alignment, accountability and delivery on site and in the office

  • Take away specific actions to use immediately in their own leadership and project work

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Project Managers, Construction Managers and Client-Side Project Managers

  • Property and Infrastructure Clients

  • Consultants, Engineers and Design Professionals

  • Contractors, Subcontractors and Commercial Managers

  • Quantity Surveyors, Development Managers, Asset and Portfolio Managers

  • Anyone involved in planning, procuring, designing or delivering construction and infrastructure projects

  • Emerging and aspiring leaders in construction

Session#3 Design and Build Projects: What Good Looks Like from Concept to Completion

Design and build can deliver faster, more integrated outcomes, but only when the model is set up and run well. This session, the third in the Building Legends series, will examine what ‘good’ looks like across the full project lifecycle, from early client brief and procurement strategy through design development, construction and handover.

Featuring three practitioner perspectives, the session will explore how smarter procurement and delivery models can drive collaboration, innovation and better results. A commercial manager from a main contractor will share how to structure and manage design and build contracts for success. A client or design manager will outline how to set clear outcomes, manage design risk and maintain client value. A quantity surveyor will focus on cost planning, change management and commercial governance in a design and build environment.

Attendees will leave with practical insights they can apply to upcoming projects, whether they are on the client, consultant or contractor side.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify the key features of a well-structured design and build project from concept to completion

  • Understand how procurement strategy and contract form influence collaboration, risk and outcomes

  • Recognise the roles and responsibilities of client, designer, contractor and QS in a design and build model

  • Apply practical approaches to cost planning, change management and commercial governance

  • Use lessons from recent projects to avoid common pitfalls and improve delivery performance

  • Take away checklists and questions to use on their own design and build projects

  • Property and Infrastructure Clients

  • Consultants, Engineers and Design Professionals

  • Contractors, Subcontractors and Commercial Managers

  • Quantity Surveyors, Development Managers, Asset and Portfolio Managers
