Visiting the CARTERS annual Power Up tool sale proved potentially lifesaving for people who took advantage of free skin cancer spot checks at the series of events.

Powering up awareness around melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, was part of this year’s annual CARTERS tool sale event calendar. During August and September, Power Up brought people together to talk trades, enjoy food, try their luck at games and have free skin cancer spot checks, in partnership with Melanoma New Zealand.
Events held at CARTERS branches across the country provided Kiwis in construction and related trades, who often work outdoors in the sun, with the opportunity to receive life-saving melanoma education and sun smart information.
Melanoma New Zealand’s Nurse Educator examined 343 people over 15 events around the country, and found 43 suspicious lesions, including 20 melanomas.
One of those who discovered a suspicious spot was Paul, who received a free spot check at CARTERS in Kerikeri. He explained, “While the Melanoma van was at our local Power Up breakfast, I, as well as many customers, took advantage of the free spot check.
“The nurse noticed an irregular mole, which I then had checked by my doctor. My doctor decided it didn’t look right, so I had it cut out, and he sent it for testing.
He added, “Another builder I talked to in the following weeks had a very similar story. I think having the van at our events was a great decision. I’ve told many builders my story and I’m sure more of them will use this service if it was available at our next event.”
Another customer also shared, “I had a spot removed, which turned out to be cancer. So I have been back for a second operation and I’m waiting for results to come back.
“I believe this was a great initiative having this at a tradie breakfast. I believe it captured some people that don't normally make the time to get checked out or go to the doctor unless they absolutely need to.”
Melanoma New Zealand Communications Manager Kate Fullan said, “We’re proud to work with CARTERS to build a future free from melanoma. Thanks for all the great teamwork!”
